On his 20th birthday, South African Shane Dadswell celebrated with a 50 over world record.
50 Over World Record
In the North West Province amateur club league, Dadswell, playing for Potchefstroom University against Potchefstroom Town, amassed a new 50 over world record of 490 runs. His record came off 151 balls and featured 27 fours and 57 sixes. His strike rate was a barely believable 325. He was ably supported by number four batsman Ruan Haasbroek, who scored 104 off 52 balls. This included 12 fours and 6 sixes, at a strike rate of 200.
The University team eventually ended up with a score of 677 for 3 after 50 overs. Potchefstroom Town responded with 290/9. Dadwell chipped in with a handy 2 for 32 in seven overs. Potch University won by the incredible margin of 387 runs.
Not a Day to Bowl
The Town team bowlers took a hammering. Opening bowler Grobbelaar conceded 94 runs off the 6 overs he bowled. First change bowler Dawid Crowther conceded 131 runs in his ten overs. Seeing as only six bowlers were used to counter this carnage, we have to wonder if some of the part time bowlers picked up mysterious hamstring strains….

Putting this 50 Over World Record into Context
There is nothing that can detract from the young man’s performance. The North West Premier League is one level below the semi-professional North West Dragons team. Players who perform at this level are selected to play for the professional Highveld Lions team. Being such a young man, Dadwell has given himself every opportunity to be considered for higher selection.
