The numbers suggest what impact Krunal Pandya has had in the very short stint that he has had with Team India. Krunal’s ability to strike at a rate of 156.4 in the last five overs and score a boundary every 5 balls that he faces will prove to be vital in making the 160s as the 180s.

Krunal also has a career strike rate of 131.52 which shows that at any given position, Krunal Pandya can score runs at a faster rate than Ravindra Jadeja whose career strike rate is 123.91.

What does the IPL say?

Krunal Pandya has proven to be more effective with the bat compared to the more experienced Jadeja. Krunal Pandya has been a terrific hitter in the death overs compared to Jadeja. His strike rate of 166.09 at the death and the high percentage of runs scored by him through boundaries are a testament to his power-hitting prowess.

Also, Krunal Pandya has not just been playing in the lower middle order (number 7) for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL but also plays at 5 when the team requires him the most whereas Jadeja plays mostly at 7 and rarely at 6 for the Chennai Super Kings.

The six 30+ scores of Krunal in the last two IPL seasons were all a result of him batting frequently at 5. This also shows how good a floater he can be in the T20s and his ability to control a batting collapse.

Who’s the better batsman of the two?

Krunal certainly is the clear winner with the bat. He has been magnificent in adapting himself to the situation and delivering what is expected most of him. His ability to pace his innings well if given a chance to play up the order along with his capability to go berserk in the death overs has made him a very reliable middle-order batsman.

The better bowler of the two at the International stage:

Jadeja the bowler pips Krunal the bowler at the international stage. Jadeja for long has held his reputation of being a bowler who can keep the runs in check and get regular wickets in the middle overs.

Krunal has not been as consistent a bowler as Jadeja at the international stage but has also chipped in with some incredible performances and his 4/36 against Australia at Sydney which gained him a Man of the Match award is note-worthy.

Who has done well with the ball in the IPL?

Krunal Pandya bowls against New Zealand 2020

Jadeja is the most experienced of the two when it comes to the bowling department. But the numbers suggest that neither has made a compelling case in the IPL. Also, it is very important to note that Jadeja has played nine games in the 2018 and 2019 season of the IPL at the spin-friendly MA Chidambaram Stadium, the home of the Chennai Super Kings.

On the other hand, Krunal Pandya has played 14 games in the 2018 and 2019 season of the IPL in the red soil of the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai which is known to be a batting-friendly track always full of runs with hardly any assistance to the spinners and to have an economy rate of 7.18 is commendable.

There is no clear winner in the IPL among the two in the bowling department but credits can be given to Krunal for being on par with Jadeja even though he bowls in a batting-friendly track.

The most trusted bowler between Krunal Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja:

Jadeja at the international level has been a very trust-worthy bowler for India. Jadeja’s ability to finish his overs in a real quick and maintain consistent line and length has been his strength.

With so much experience under his belt, Team India would look to use Jadeja in the middle overs to contain runs and build pressure on the batsmen if he is a part of the playing XI.

Krunal’s ability to produce results in tracks that assist the batsman is one thing that we have to laud him for. While both have been good for their franchises, Jadeja cuts ahead of Krunal based on his bowling performances at the international level.

The Final Verdict – Who Gets the Nod?

While Krunal outweighs Jadeja in the batting department, Jadeja edges Krunal in the bowling department. As the World Cup will be hosted by Australia, the Indian team would likely want to go in with three front-line pacers and a seaming all-rounder in Hardik Pandya. With Chahal most likely to be the lead spinner, India will want their other spinner to bat a bit more than he could bowl.

With 4 front-line bowlers and an all-rounder already in the XI, one of Jadeja or Krunal will act as the sixth bowler and there would hardly be any necessity for them to complete their four-over quota.

In such a case, India would look to have more depth in their batting line up. Moreover, after Krunal’s debut, Krunal has had a long stint with the Indian team than Jadeja which shows that Team India is more likely to persist with Krunal Pandya.

Krunal Pandya has also made his presence felt on the Indian side where he bagged the Man of the Series award in the T20I series on the Caribbean Island for his all-round performance in August 2019.

Jadeja the batsman has gained back the management’s trust after his 2019 World Cup semifinal heroics and was drafted into the side for India’s tour of New Zealand which happened in January in the year 2020 after being in and out of the T20I side for a long time.

Krunal as on date is the front runner for the spot. Jadeja needs a great IPL 2020 to stand a chance against his counterpart. The management mustn’t mix up performances in two different formats to decide who’s better. The IPL 2020 will have a great say in who is making it to the side.

What does Team India need?
A batsman who can adapt according to the match situation and act as a floater and contribute in any situation with the bat. Primarily a number 7 batsman who can clear the ropes at regular intervals in the death overs. A sixth bowler (preferably a spinner) who can offer some useful overs with the ball.
