England’s ODI Squad Play Intra-Group Friendly
England’s ODI squad stepped up their preparations ahead of the start of white-ball action this summer, with a behind closed door intra-squad friendly at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton today.
Two sides captained by short-form captain Eoin Morgan and newly announced vice-captain for the summer Moeen Ali, played out a 40 overs per side contest on the South Coast.
Moeen and Bairstow goes ballistic for Team Ali
Team Ali batted first and amassed a breathtaking score of 325 from their 40 overs, that’s a run rate of 8.12 per over. Jonny Bairstow found his form once more with a blistering 127 from just 88 balls. A brutal knock which included 16 fours and seven sixes, clearly Bairstow showing no remorse for his fellow squad members bowling figures.
Team captain Moeen Ali added late runs with his own 85 from 45 balls, a strike rate of just a nudge under 200.00, helping his team set a target which was never likely to be caught.
Together Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali showed just why they are superb limited-overs players. This, despite both being dropped from England’s test team in the last 12 months. England have an embarrassment of riches in their limited-overs squads and this can only be a good thing.
The World T20 is approaching soon in February-March 2021 and England have a great chance of winning. England’s ODI squad will be keen to prove that they should be in the line-up for that tournament.
Duckett tries but Team Morgan falls well short
In pursuit, only Ben Duckett every truly threatened as he passed 50, Team Morgan eventually bowled out 100 runs short. Ending up 225 all out with 7.3 overs remaining.
England’s ODI Squad Future Fixtures
The squad will play another of these types of matches before an England Lions team takes on Ireland on Sunday 26th July, the final preparation before the series begins.
The competitive matches begin next Thursday with the first of a three-match ODI series with Ireland. Following a three-Test match series with Pakistan, will be a T20 series with the same opposition, starting at the end of August. Mohammad Amir has rejoined the squad for that series. This will likely be a big boost to Pakistan as they can now call on their experienced campaigner.
Pakistan have a very strong T20 squad. In fact, they were rated as the number 1 T20 side not too long ago. It will likely be a challenging series for England.
